Storage Time After Opening Liquid Silicone & Handling Tips | Jiajinghong Silicone
How long does liquid silicone last after opening? It depends on type, storage, brand guidelines and pre-use status—here’s the scoop!
Silicone recommend using it within 3-6 months post-opening, when performance (viscosity, curing speed, tear resistance) is most stable. Breakdown:
Addition-Type (Food-Grade/Platinum-Catalyzed): Use within 3 months! Sensitive to metal impurities, it easily “poisons” (fails to cure) in air.
Condensation-Type (Industrial-Grade/Organotin-Cured): Highly hygroscopic—use within 6 months. Beyond that, moisture loss may cause thickening, stratification or incomplete curing.
Max Shelf Life: Proper storage (sealed, dark, cool dry) extends it to ~1 year. After 1 year, silicone may lose usability (thickening, stratification, poor performance)—condensation-type is more prone to this.

Handling Expired Silicone
3-6 Months Unused: Stir well with curing agent. If thick, adjust curing agent ratio or increase humidity (e.g., humidifier).
Over 6 Months: Check for stratification, clumping or odor. If performance drops, don’t use—consult the brand or professionals.
Over 1 Year: Loses fluidity; cured performance drops sharply. Dispose professionally as non-hazardous waste—no random tossing.
Guidelines: Follow the manual, use “first-in-first-out”, and mark the opening date.
Storage time depends on type, storage and brand rules. Hongtu advises following instructions, checking status regularly, and using within the best period for stable performance, less waste and environmental protection.
