Solutions for High Hardness of Liquid Mold Silicone & Professional Supplier
The hardness of liquid mold silicone is generally adjusted according to customer usage needs. However, some users find that the produced silicone mold has higher hardness, which mostly happens to new users. Experienced users know that there is a certain error range (usually ±2 Shore A) between the actual hardness of the purchased silicone and the data provided to the manufacturer. Especially for new users who are unsure of their required hardness, the error will be larger. Below, Jiajinghong, a liquid mold silicone manufacturer, provides two methods to reduce hardness.
Method 1: Mix High-Hardness and Low-Hardness Silicone
For example, mixing 20-Shore-A silicone with 10-Shore-A silicone will result in a combined hardness of about 15 Shore A. Note: Condensation silicone and addition silicone cannot be mixed, otherwise the silicone will fail to cure.
Method 2: Use Silicone Oil to Reduce Hardness
Generally, adding 1% silicone oil reduces the hardness by about 0.9-1.1 degrees; adding 10% silicone oil reduces it by about 5 degrees. However, excessive silicone oil will damage the molecular weight of silicone, reduce tear and tensile strength, and shorten the mold’s service life. It may also cause mold deformation.
Recommendation: The ratio of silicone to silicone oil should not exceed 5%. Use high-viscosity silicone oil if possible. If adding more than 5%, test a small amount first to confirm the mold’s usability.
